Method and sources
The calculator applies legal texts, not averages: the French Highway Code (Code de la route), the Code of Criminal Procedure and the order governing speed cameras, in the versions in force as reread on Légifrance on 22 October 2026. Every amount, number of points and deadline comes from src/data/params-2026.json, which records for each value the article it comes from. No page types a figure by hand.
From measured speed to recorded speed
A camera does not fine the speed it measures. Article 6 of the order of 4 June 2009 sets the maximum permitted error: 5 km/h below 100 km/h and 5% above it for a fixed device; 10 km/h and 10% for a device used on the move (camera car). The margin is subtracted from the measured speed, then the result is rounded down to the unit: that is our choice, the most favourable to the driver and consistent with the notices we have seen, but no text sets the rounding. On the notice, the recorded speed printed is what counts, so the tool accepts either figure.
Example: 97 km/h measured on an 80 road gives 92 km/h recorded, 12 km/h over, €68 and 1 point. 136 km/h on a 110 road gives 129 km/h recorded and 1 points.
The speeding scale
Article R413-14, as worded since decree 2023-1150, puts speeding under 20 km/h over in class 3 when the limit is above 50 km/h and class 4 otherwise; anything 20 km/h over or more is class 4. Points: none under 5 km/h over, then 1, 2, 3 and 4 points from 5, 20, 30 and 40 km/h over. From 30 km/h over, a court may suspend the licence for up to three years. Since the end of December 2025 (law of 9 July 2025 and decree 2025-1269), 50 km/h over or more is a criminal offence (article L413-1): up to three months in prison and a €3,750 fine, 6 points, and a fixed criminal fine of €300 (€250 reduced, €600 increased). Example: 137 km/h measured on an 80 road gives 130 recorded, hence the offence.
Amounts and deadlines
Amounts per class come from article R49-9 of the Code of Criminal Procedure and the Service Public page on fixed fines: class 2 €35, class 3 €68, class 4 €135. The reduced fine is paid within 15 days of the notice being sent (30 online), the standard one within 45 days (60 online); after that it is increased. Parking has no reduced rate (article 529-7). Example: notice sent on 1 October 2026, reduced until 16 October 2026, standard until 15 November 2026.
Points and getting them back
The points tool applies article L223-6: all points return after two years with no new offence, three years if any offence in the period is a class 4 or 5 fine or a criminal offence; a single point returns after six months with no new offence; a course gives back 4 points, once a year. Time runs from when the deduction becomes final (fine paid, conviction), which the tool asks for in months. The probationary licence follows article L223-1: 6 points, then one sixth of the maximum each year (a quarter after accompanied driving), provided no offence costing points has been committed since the start of the period.
Fixed cameras
The list comes from the “Liste des radars fixes en France” dataset of the Interior Ministry, published on data.gouv.fr under the Licence Ouverte 2.0. File read: jeu-de-donnees-liste-des-radars-fixes-en-france-12-2025.csv, dated 30 December 2025, 3,309 cameras with type, installation date, speed checked and coordinates. The script scripts/update-data.mjs attaches each camera to its town and département through the government’s administrative boundaries API; 2 cameras at sea off Menton have no town and count in no département. The speed checked is missing for red-light and level-crossing cameras and for some tower cameras (1,492 in all). Mobile units, camera cars and relocatable roadworks cameras are not in this file.
Tests
The examples on this page, the scale bands, the margin at 99 and 100 km/h, the offence at 50 km/h over, the payment deadlines, points recovery and the probationary licence are tests (src/lib/engine/sanctions.test.ts), rerun at every update. A failing test blocks publication.
What the site does not do
- It does not read your record: the points balance is an estimate from what you enter; only the official record is binding.
- It does not predict what a court would decide: it gives the maximum penalty.
- It does not publish course prices, which are free and not published by the authorities, nor penalties we could not check against a text in force.
- It sells no course, advice or insurance, and asks for no account, email or phone number.
Updates
Cameras: every week, a scheduled job rereads the dataset, rejects a file with fewer than 2,000 cameras, reruns the tests, rebuilds and republishes the site. Penalty scale: whenever a cited text changes. An error reported to contact@amendeetpoints.fr is checked against the source, fixed and turned into a test. See the editorial policy.
