French probationary licence: your points today

Enter how long you have held your licence, whether you did accompanied driving and any offences: the tool gives your points and what they will become.

A French probationary licence (permis probatoire) starts with 6 points. Article L223-1 of the Highway Code tops it up every year of the probationary period by one sixth of the maximum, 2 points a year for 3 years, or by a quarter, 3 points a year for 2 years, after early accompanied driving (AAC). The condition is strict: no offence costing points may have been committed since the start of the probationary period. A single offence is therefore enough to lose every remaining top-up, on top of the points taken. Example: a driver who has held the licence for thirty months, without accompanied driving and with no offence, has 10 points; the same driver having lost one point in the eighteenth month has only 7. Losing three points or more makes a course compulsory, within four months. An optional additional training session, between the sixth and twelfth month, shortens the probationary period, according to Service Public.

Speed limits for new drivers

Throughout the period, lower maximum speeds apply: 110 km/h on motorways, 100 on dual carriageways, 80 on sections with two lanes in the same direction. The full table is on the speed limits page. Any excess is measured from that lower limit.

Frequently asked questions

Do the lost top-ups come back at the end of probation?

No. The text makes each top-up conditional on no offence since the start of the period. Once lost, they do not return, and the balance only rises through ordinary recovery under article L223-6: back to the maximum after two or three years with no offence, or through a course.

What is the alcohol limit on a probationary licence?

0.2 g/l of blood, or 0.10 mg/l of breath, instead of 0.5 g/l for other drivers. In practice it means not drinking at all before driving. The offence costs six points, the whole balance of a new probationary licence, which is then invalid.

Can the probationary period be shortened?

Yes. According to Service Public, an optional additional training day (seven hours) taken between the sixth and twelfth month after passing, at a driving school with the quality label, shortens the period: to two years instead of three with standard training, and to eighteen months instead of two after accompanied driving.
